The rosette is deployed from the ship's deck with an ice team in the background, on the ice floe. A rosette is a metal barrel carrying remotely operated sampling bottles and probes measuring oxygen, ph, temperature, salinity and chlorophyll content. The bottles are opened at different depths along the descent of the rosette. Monitoring at regular intervals allows ecosystem changes to be detected and linked to observed climate change and projections to be made.
